{"id":835,"date":"2024-01-28T21:43:28","date_gmt":"2024-01-28T21:43:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timothypatrickbrown.com\/?p=835"},"modified":"2024-06-04T21:57:09","modified_gmt":"2024-06-04T20:57:09","slug":"beta-reader-feedback","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timothypatrickbrown.com\/index.php\/2024\/01\/28\/beta-reader-feedback\/","title":{"rendered":"Beta Reader Feedback"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I\u2019ve got feedback from some of my <a href=\"https:\/\/timothypatrickbrown.com\/index.php\/2024\/01\/23\/rejection-sensitivity-and-beta-readers\/\">beta readers<\/a> on the first act of my work in progress. The good news is that I can write and the narrative holds together. That\u2019s what I really wanted to check. Other nice things were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The characters are well painted. You know what Perry is like, what she wants, and what she struggles with.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A distinct writing voice shines through &#8211; my writer\u2019s voice. Best feedback ever. I\u2019m so pleased.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The \u2018bones\u2019 of the writing is solid i.e. it has structure and isn\u2019t an amorphous ball of writerly nothing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Clearly it\u2019s not a work of rare genius and plenty of suggestions for improvement were made:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pacing is too slow. This is a difficult one as it is in a meditation studio and ienvitably the characters spend a lot of time sitting still. But all the beta readers said it, so I have to take it seriously.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The opening scene is too static. Perry stands around thinking which is a classic newbie writerly mistake.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Too much time spend in one location and feels claustrophobic\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is too much drinking of herbal teas. I thought those scenes were wonderfully funny but no-one likes them. That\u2019s a shame as there are lots more coffee and tea chats, and I think it forms a central part of the character development. One to ponder about.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Inevitably many changes are needed, and some will take significant structural change. It\u2019s all good.
