One year later and it\u2019s become an (un)healthy obsession. There have been times I\u2019ve been blazing with creative fire, times when I\u2019ve been <a href=\"https:\/\/timothypatrickbrown.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/19\/the-doubful-doldrums\/\">poisoned by doubt<\/a>, and times when I\u2019ve got a little bit crazy with it all. It\u2019s been a great year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that\u2019s enough emotion. What are the facts. What are the numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Novel<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The main writing event this year has been my novel \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/timothypatrickbrown.com\/index.php\/category\/diary-of-a-first-novel\/\">Somewhere In Between<\/a>\u2019 &#8211; a romance set in a beginners meditation class. Here\u2019s how it currently stands:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>87,251 words over 349 pages. It\u2019s a proper book.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>12 Parts and 51 chapters. Lots of small chapters which I think works.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/timothypatrickbrown.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/24\/the-great-print-out\/\">8 drafts completed<\/a> and I\u2019ve work started on the ninth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And here\u2019s what it took to get there<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Highest word count was 94,280 on 24<sup>th<\/sup> November 2023. This was the <a href=\"https:\/\/timothypatrickbrown.com\/index.php\/2023\/12\/03\/softening-after-first-draft\/\">completed first draft<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lowest word count was 74,177 on 1<sup>st<\/sup> April 2024. This was a wholesale restructure after feedback from <a href=\"https:\/\/allyblakeauthor.weebly.com\/\">Ally Blake<\/a>. It was much better for it, but seeing my work evaporate into nothing was tough.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>51 cut scenes, 29,452 words in total, and that doesn\u2019t include line level edits and general tinkering. A lot of darlings have been slaughtered.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3 title changes (<a href=\"https:\/\/timothypatrickbrown.com\/index.php\/2023\/12\/20\/softening-logline-and-synopsis\/\">Softening<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/timothypatrickbrown.com\/index.php\/2024\/05\/29\/love-and-distraction\/\">Love and Distraction<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/timothypatrickbrown.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/06\/somewhere-in-between\/\">Somewhere In Between<\/a>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>5 <a href=\"https:\/\/timothypatrickbrown.com\/index.php\/2023\/08\/22\/thriller-or-romance\/\">genres changes<\/a> &#8211; Comedy to Thriller, Thriller to Romance, Romance to Women\u2019s Fiction and back to Romance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>5 people have <a href=\"https:\/\/timothypatrickbrown.com\/index.php\/2024\/01\/19\/outside-help\/\">read parts of the book<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1 person (me) has read the entire novel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Words<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve written on most days over the last year. This is what I spent that time doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>186,588 words written and edited (novel, blog, ideas, morning pages).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>55 blog posts published and 5 scheduled.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Number of days that I wrote my first novel &#8211; 253<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Number of days that I wrote a posts for this blog &#8211; 116<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Number of days that I worked on ideas for other books &#8211; 40<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Number of days that I wrote morning pages &#8211; 37<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Number of days spent outlining my second novel &#8211; 3<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Money<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Pens and paper are cheap enough, but there is a heap of other stuff that can be bought to assist the writing life. Here\u2019s what I spent my cash on this year &#8211; some were borderline essential, most were super useful, and a few were authorial luxuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Membership fees to two writing organisations (<a href=\"https:\/\/queenslandwriters.org.au\/\">Queensland Writers Centre<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/romanceaustralia.com\/\">Romance Writers of Australia<\/a>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2 conferences.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flights to Adelaide for the <a href=\"https:\/\/willorganise.eventsair.com\/2024-romance-writers-of-australia\/conference-registration\">second conference<\/a> &#8211; and 3 days in an Airbnb.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3 face to face classes (a 4th was free with RWA membership).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/timothypatrickbrown.com\/index.php\/2023\/09\/14\/scrivener\/\">Scrivener<\/a> (the best spend of the year and I would argue essential).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>15 <a href=\"https:\/\/timothypatrickbrown.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/19\/5-essential-books-for-aspiring-authors\/\">books on writing<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>5 hours of mentorship from an established author.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Amount of money spent on the above stuff &#8211; don\u2019t wanted to think about it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Amount of tax deductions claimed &#8211; $0.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not a business so I can\u2019t claim back anything &#8211; but one day I hope to publish, and on that happy day, there will be a credit column sitting along side the all debits.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Photo by <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/@m_____me?utm_content=creditCopyText&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=unsplash\">m.<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/photos\/selective-focus-photography-of-graph-ZzOa5G8hSPI?utm_content=creditCopyText&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=unsplash\">Unsplash<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s been about a year since I picked up a scruffy notepad and wrote the first few scenes of a comedy novel while watching breakfast TV.
